Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society
Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society -- Kalamazoo, MI

Welcome to the KVGS website!

We serve historians and genealogists who are interested in the Kalamazoo River Valley region - and around the world, too.  Join us!

Welcome All!

We are excited to see you at our next general meeting on January 20, 2025. This event is hybrid (Portage District Library, 300 Library Lane, Portage, MI, and on Zoom). Socializing and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm at the library, with a short business meeting starting at 7:00 pm. You may have a friend you would like to bring with you. Remember, guests are always welcome at our meetings!

Immediately following the business meeting, Judy Nimer Muhn, Ed.M., FSA Scot, and the Michigan Genealogical Council President will present "I've tested my DNA: Now What?”

https://mikvgs.org/upload/events/images/1732219259_JudyNimerMuhnMP26856592406282331P.jfifThe advent of using DNA with traditional paper family history research has revolutionized the study of our families and ancestors. Combining the paper trail with the science of chromosomes and our cousin relationships provides genealogists, historians, and social scientists with new information, transforming what we thought we knew. Come and learn all about it.

KVGS members can expect to receive a meeting reminder email with a Zoom registration link a few days before the meeting. You can also register on Zoom through the website EVENTS page.

We invite you to visit our EVENTS page for information about more exciting learning opportunities coming in the New Year: "Researching African American Ancestors," "Peter Robinson Settlements, a British Canadian Experiment,” “Emigration, Immigration, and Naturalization," “WWI and WWII Military Records," and more.

KVGS has recently added something new: monthly Genealogy Help sessions at the Portage District Library Heritage Room on Thursdays following our general meeting. Bring your questions to discuss with KVGS volunteers at the Portage District Library Heritage Room on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 10 am to 12 pm. Just drop in and see what another point of view can do to help solve your problem.

Suppose you missed an earlier program, such as Certified Genealogist Annette Burke Lyttle's excellent November presentation, “Quaker Resources in the Family History Library and Other Archives.” You will find program recordings and handouts from many programs under our website's MEMBERS section and then in the RECORDINGS/HANDOUTS section. Please remember to sign in as a member first.

See you January 20, 2025! In the meantime, Happy Holidays to all!
